Need to escape the 9 to 5 for a long weekend away? How about exploring a cheap city break in Europe. With over hundreds of cities to chose from in Europe you are spoilt for choice. To help sway your decision, I have put together some tips on how I have secured a cheap city break to Cologne.

Flights

When people think about booking a cheap city break in Germany. The first cities that come to mind are Berlin or Munich. However, one main reason I booked a cheap city break to Cologne was the cheap flights on offer.

To book my flights I searched in a incognito window on Google Chrome. The reason behind this, is that you will always see the same price no matter how many times you search. Searching in a normal browser several times for the same flights, can often see a price increase. As the site wants to ‘scare’ you into booking the flights immediately.

In an incognito window, I searched for flights through Ryanair for the dates in which I wanted to travel. In order to get the best prices, I chose to fly on a Friday and return on a Monday. Instead of returning on a Sunday, as having a ‘longer weekend’ reduces the price significantly.

The flights to Cologne are considerably cheaper for a return flight. Compared to the other cities in Germany. I chose Manchester Airport because it’s the closest airport to me, in which Ryanair operate cheap flights to Germany. If you live in Southern England the best airport for cheap flights with Ryanair, is London Stansted. The flight departure times to Cologne are good in comparison to other cities within Germany. As a result, this maximises the time exploring the city itself.

Hotels

When booking a cheap city break to Cologne there are several factors I took into consideration when booking the hotel. Firstly the location, I wanted to be central within the city without having to trek miles to the main tourist attractions. Furthermore, the location needed to be within easy reach to train station. As this is how I plan to get to and from the airport.

As a result, I have chosen to stay at Novum Hotel Ahl Meerkatzen Köln Altstadt, Cologne. This is a 3-star hotel in the Altstadt-sud district. The hotel itself is centrally located within walking distance to Köln Cathedral, the train station and many other top attractions.

Novum is an Europe hotel chain, where a universal standard is expected from all their hotels making it a safe choice when choosing a hotel abroad. Furthermore, you can add breakfast to your stay, for a convenient start to the day on your cheap city break. However, I chose not to add this extra because I like to explore different food outlets when staying in a new city.

I booked this hotel through expedia.com as they often offer discount codes towards bookings. They are currently offering 10% off all bookings with the voucher code AFFUKVCD10HOT0907 (If for any reason the code does not work email me and I will send you their latest voucher code).

Cheap City Break – Airport Transfers/Parking

When booking a cheap city break to Cologne, I have chosen to use the train network to get to and from the airport. Trains leave the airport station every 20-30 mins toward the city centre. With the journey itself taking less than 3o mins. A one-way ticket price for an adult costs less than 3 euros, which is much cheaper than a getting a shuttle or taxi. Finally, regarding parking at Manchester airport, I have booked off-site airport parking for the duration of my travels. Check out my blog post on cheap airport parking to find out more details.

These are my top tips on how I managed to book a cheap city break to Cologne. With the full trip costing less than £120 per person. I hope this has inspired you to make your next city break a trip to Cologne. Need an itinerary inspiration for visiting Cologne? Why not check out my post on the Top 6 Things to Do.
