The Ultimate Guide To Afternoon Tea

afternoon tea

A……is for afternoon tea. To kick off the Alphabet Dating challenge I chose to experience a relaxing Afternoon Tea.  Afternoon tea was introduced in England by the 7th Duchess of Bedford in 1840. As the Duchess asked for a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room late in the afternoon. To celebrate this British pastime, I have put together a guide on how you can get involved with this activity.

Patisserie Valerie

Probably one of the most popular places you can go in the UK is Patisserie Valerie. Patisserie Valerie offer an afternoon tea for two priced at £25. The menu consists of a mixture of Savouries, Patisseries & Scones.  The savoury treats consist of smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise finger sandwiches and vegetable quiches. Whereas, the patisserie delights include chocolate eclairs and mini cake slices. Also it is served with your choice of refillable hot beverages. The full menu can be found here. Patisserie Valerie have several locations across the UK and Ireland where you can sample their delightful afternoon tea. Patisserie Valerie often have a voucher on Groupon or Wowcher, in which you can enjoy the same delightful treats at a reduced rate.

Boozy Afternoon Tea

Another style you can experience, that is growing increasingly popular, is Sparkling Afternoon Tea. This style contains a traditional mixture of cakes and sandwiches, but is served with an alcoholic drink, usually prosecco. Various outlets across the UK serve sparkling afternoon tea. To find the best deal on this style, I would suggest to look either on Wowcher or Groupon because both of these sites constantly offer deals locally within your area. Often these deals are at top chains, such as Malmaison, Hilton, Marco Pierre White, etc.

Alphabet Date Review

For my letter ‘A’ date Michael & I sampled afternoon tea. I first looked on Groupon to find some local deals within our area. From this I bought a voucher for two at Convive restaurant. The menu consists of sandwiches served on ciabatta, battenberg slices, scones, and miniature milkshakes. Accompanied with your choice of tea or coffee. I really enjoy this experience, but I think I enjoyed the setting more than the food itself. As the restaurant serves it out on the garden terrace on a picnic styled tray. If it is a lovely summer’s day, like on the day we visited, it creates a romantic and idyllic ambience.

Afternoon Tea is definitely one of my favourite things to do and I enjoyed sharing this experience for a date. I cannot wait to see what he has planned for activity for the letter ‘B’ as it is his turn to choose!
